Overview
The Awira is a large wasp-like insect native to the Rainland. Feared for its painful sting but prized for the euphoric fluid contained within its tail sac, the creature occupies a unique position in Camon culture. Entire harvesting traditions, celebratory feasts, and communal drinks revolve around the careful collection of Awira venom.
Appearance
Adult Awira are approximately the size of a Camon hand. They possess segmented bodies, powerful wings, a prominent stinger, and a toxin-rich tail sac. Colonies often number in the thousands and aggressively defend their nests.
Habitat and Nests
Awira establish colonies wherever protection from the elements can be found. Common nesting locations include hollow trees, rock crevices, cliff faces, and natural cavities. Mature colonies may extend for dozens of yards and dominate the surrounding territory.
Sting and Toxin
An Awira sting is intensely painful and can incapacitate the unprepared. While rarely fatal to a healthy Camon, multiple stings are dangerous and colony attacks can be lethal. The toxin is highly sought after despite its risks.
Masorita Harvesting Method
Camon females harvest Awira using smoke produced from dried Masorita, a Rainland herb. The smoke temporarily incapacitates the colony, allowing harvesters to collect the insects. The tails are then cured on heated stones before the fluid is extracted.
Awira Drink
The extracted tail fluid is used to prepare one of the most beloved beverages among the Camonra. Small quantities induce relaxation, euphoria, and heightened sociability. Larger quantities may produce visions, hallucinations, or intensely vivid dreams.
Role in Camon Culture
Awira drink appears frequently at celebrations, victories, clan gatherings, and feasts. Knowledge of harvesting techniques is passed down through generations and remains one of the specialized skills maintained by Camon communities.

An individual Awira is not especially dangerous. An Awira colony, however, can overwhelm much larger creatures through sheer numbers and repeated stings. Harvesting should be attempted only by those familiar with Masorita smoke preparation.
