Overview
Ebert served at the Monastery of Ardidhus under Abbot Jaros. Surviving records describe a young monk who tended gardens, messenger birds, and travelers with the same care. He was not a warrior. Visitors to the monastery remembered him because he made the place feel safe.
Ardidhus Monastery
At Ardidhus, Ebert’s work was ordinary on its face: the courtyard gardens, the bird-cotes, the greeting of guests at the gate. Jaros trusted him with that hospitality. Evliit, arriving under Watcher escort, was received as a friend because Ebert received him as one.
Friendship with Evliit
During the Watchers’ War, Ebert became one of Evliit’s closest companions. His optimism and faith gave the Sword Bearer rest when the monastery’s silence would not. Friends of Evliit, he said, were friends of Ardidhus.
Historical Significance
Ebert is remembered as proof that the strength of Ardidhus was not only in its walls or its tomes. Healing and welcome were a discipline, and he kept them. Later ages still tell of the monk who met a Watcher at the gate and did not look away.
