Overview
The Brakkul is among the most feared predators of the Rainland wetlands. Slow moving and heavily armored, it relies on concealment, venom, and a specialized feeding tentacle to capture prey. Though rarely seen in motion, evidence of its presence is often found in the form of hollowed carcasses and gatherings of scavengers.
Appearance
Brakkuls possess broad armored shells frequently coated in mud, algae, and mire growth. When resting, they bury themselves beneath wet soil and shallow water, exposing only the upper shell and rows of crimson toxin-bearing spines. To many travelers they resemble little more than submerged stones or natural rises in the marsh.
Beneath the shell is a muscular body capable of extending a feeding tentacle tipped with a circular suction mouth lined by concentric rows of teeth.
Hunting Behavior
The Brakkul is an ambush predator that relies on patience rather than speed. It senses movement through vibrations in the surrounding mire and strikes when prey wanders close.
Its dorsal spines inject a powerful paralytic toxin. Victims are often immobilized while remaining conscious. Once prey can no longer flee, the feeding tentacle attaches itself and bores through flesh, extracting organs and soft tissues directly into the predator's body.
Feeding
The Hollower earns its common name from the remains it leaves behind. Internal organs are consumed first through the feeding tentacle. The Brakkul then uses its jaws to slowly feed upon the carcass over several days.
Because of its deliberate feeding habits, large bones, hide fragments, and less desirable tissues are frequently left behind.
Relationship with Rotsnouts
Rotsnouts commonly gather near Brakkul feeding grounds. The remains abandoned by a Hollower provide an abundant source of food for scavenger packs.
Experienced Rainland travelers know that unusual concentrations of Rotsnouts may indicate a recent Brakkul kill and the possible presence of a concealed predator nearby.
Signs of Presence
- Mud-covered shell-like mounds in shallow water
- Rows of crimson spines protruding from the mire
- Carcasses missing internal organs
- Clusters of feeding Rotsnouts
- Disturbed mud around feeding sites
Settler Lore
Among Rainland settlers, Brakkuls are known as Hollowers. Stories warn travelers never to rest on unfamiliar mounds and never to ignore groups of feeding Rotsnouts.
If the body is hollow, the Hollower isn't far behind.

While not a fast-moving animal, the Brakkul's camouflage, toxin, and gruesome feeding methods make it one of the deadliest predators in the Rainland.
